Federal Government Launches NPSSI to Solarise Public Institutions and Cut Governance Costs

    August 8, 2025

The Federal Government has launched the National Public Sector Solarization Initiative (NPSSI), a major step toward reducing Nigeria’s reliance on diesel and cutting electricity costs in public institutions.

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Budget Office of the Federation, Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp), and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to kickstart the project on Thursday, August 7, 2025, in Abuja.

The NPSSI will install solar power systems in schools, hospitals, security posts, and government offices across the country. The goal is to provide clean, reliable energy for critical services while lowering costs and reducing the carbon footprint of the public sector.

    ₦100 Billion Kick-off Fund

The Federal Government has set aside ₦100 billion to fund the first phase of the project. Future phases will attract private and international investment, without depending on government loan guarantees.

    Why It Matters

Speaking at the event, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, Managing Director of the REA, described NPSSI as a turning point for Nigeria’s energy transition.

InfraCorp’s CEO, Dr. Lazarus Angbazo, praised NPSSI as a model for future infrastructure projects, noting that government alone cannot solve Nigeria’s power problems.

Dr. Armstrong Takang, Managing Director of MOFI, stressed that Nigeria needs new business models that reduce power costs and rely less on fossil fuels.

    Beyond Power Supply

The NPSSI is not just about electricity—it’s also about:

    • Reducing diesel generator use and high electricity bills.
    • Encouraging local manufacturing and job creation.
    • Supporting Nigeria’s broader energy transition and sustainability goals.

    About REA

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is the Federal Government body responsible for expanding electricity access to unserved and underserved communities. Established under the Electricity Act 2023, the REA manages programmes like the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP), Solar Power Naija, and Energizing Education Programme, among others.
